What is ESP in a car?

 

The Electronic Stability Program ( ESP for short) is a safety technology that has been installed on all vehicles since 2014. And it works primarily in difficult road situations that require emergency braking or correction of insufficient and/or excessive steering to prevent an accident.

 

 

That is, the stabilization system helps maintain course stability, the trajectory of movement and stabilize the position of the car on slippery surfaces and during sharp turns.

 

 

How does ESP work?

 

Sensors installed on the car transmit key information to the control unit, which calculates the position of the vehicle at the turn. When the lateral acceleration exceeds the available traction of the tires to the road surface, resulting in loss of control or skidding, the system is activated.

 

 

It reduces engine power and brakes each wheel individually to return the car to the planned trajectory.

 

 

When to press the ESP button?

 

So we found out that the main purpose of ESP is to prevent the car from skidding. However, in certain situations it is difficult to avoid slipping. For example, to get out of deep snow, sticky mud or loose sand, it is important to make sure that the car can turn the wheels quite intensively. And with the anti-skid system on, it is almost impossible to do this. There is a traction limitation, in which the driving wheels turn in short jerks of a quarter turn. In this way, obstacles cannot be overcome. Is it necessary to turn off the stabilization system in such a situation?

 

ESP consists of two components: an anti-skid system and a course stability system. The first system eliminates skidding, and the second - brakes the wheels to maintain the trajectory of movement. As a rule, the car does not have a separate button for turning off the anti-skid system. Therefore, in some cars, pressing ESP OFF once turns off the traction control system, and holding it down turns off all ESP. That is, the driver can turn off only anti-skid if necessary, and ESP will continue to work for insurance.
