BMW Owner's Manual: Tire Pressure Monitoring System

This system reports a significant drop in pressure in one or more tires.

Features of the operation of the tire pressure control system

  • The system does not activate in case of unexpected severe damage to the tire under the influence of external factors.
  • The system will not work properly unless it is reset. Despite normal tire pressure, tire damage is reported, for example.
  • The system is not active and cannot report tire damage in the following cases:

— mounted wheel without RDC electronics;
— there is interference to RDC from other devices or nodes with radio frequency.

Indication of system status

The condition of the tires and the system is displayed by the color of the tires. The change in tire pressure during driving is taken into account. Adjustments are only necessary if required by the RDC.

Green : the tire pressure corresponds to the nominal.

One yellow wheel : tire damage or excessive pressure drop in the specified tire.

All wheels are yellow :

  • Tire damage or excessive pressure drop in multiple tires.
  • The system has not been reset after changing the wheels and thus warns about the last initialized tire pressures.
  • Tire damage on one or more wheels during system reset.

Gray : The system cannot detect tire damage.

Reasons:

  • RDC is reset.
  • Interference from other devices or nodes with the same radio frequency.
  • Failure in work.

How to adjust tire pressure

The status indicator additionally displays the current tire pressure and temperature. To adjust the tire pressure, the following must be taken into account: when the temperature in the tire rises, the pressure in it increases.
Therefore, tire pressure adjustment should be performed only when the tire temperature is equal to the ambient temperature. To do this, compare the displayed tire temperature with the outside temperature indicated on the instrument cluster. A system reset should be performed each time the tire pressure is adjusted and after a tire or wheel change.

How to reset the readings of the tire pressure monitoring system

1. Select the "Vehicle Info" function.
2. Select the "Car status" function.
3. Select the "Reset RDC" function.
4. Start the engine, but do not move.
5. Use the "Confirm pressure" function to reset the tire pressure.
6. Get started.

The tires will be grayed out and the message "Installing RDC..." appears. After a few minutes of driving, the adjusted tire pressure will be the set value. The readout will automatically complete while driving. On the control display, the tires will be displayed in green, and the inscription "Syst. tire pressure control RDC on.“. Movement can be interrupted in time. The reset will continue automatically when traffic resumes. If tire damage is detected during the reset, all tires on the display will turn yellow.

Low tire pressure

When the tire pressure is low, the yellow warning lamp and the car icon are lit. An additional text message is displayed.

What to do when a low tire pressure warning appears

1. Reduce speed and stop carefully. Avoid sudden impacts on the steering wheel and brakes.
2. Make sure the car has standard tires or runflat tires.

What to do if the tire is damaged

1. Identify the damaged tire.
To do this, check the pressure in all four tires. The Mobility System tire pressure indicator can be used for this. With all tires at normal pressure, the cause of the false alarm may be that the tire pressure monitoring system has been initialized. Initialize the system. If it is impossible to determine this, contact the service station.
2. Fix tire damage with Mobility System repair.

Applying a tire sealant such as Mobility System can damage the electronic unit of the RDC system in the wheel. In this case, check the electronic unit at the next opportunity and replace if necessary.

How to continue driving a car with damaged tires

1. Avoid sudden impacts on the steering wheel and brakes.
2. Do not exceed the speed of 80 km/h.
3. Check the air pressure in all four tires as soon as possible. With all tires at normal pressure, the cause of the false alarm may be that the tire pressure monitoring system has been initialized. Initialize the system.
