BMW Owner's Manual: Rules for transporting children in a car

Do not leave children unattended in the car. Reckless actions, such as opening a door, can put themselves and others at risk.
There are several basic rules for transporting children in a car:
1. Correct seats.
Universal child safety systems for all age groups can basically be installed on all car seats, with the exception of the driver's seat.
2. Children must sit in the back.
Children under 12 years of age or less than 150 cm in height must sit only in the rear of the cabin in appropriate child safety systems, otherwise there is an increased risk of injury in the event of an accident.
3. Children on the front passenger seat.
If it is necessary to install a child restraint system on the front passenger's seat, the frontal and side child safety restraints on the front passenger's side should be deactivated. Deactivation of the front passenger's airbags is possible only with the front passenger's airbag switch lock. If you install a child restraint system on the front passenger seat, you must deactivate the front passenger airbag, otherwise the airbags can seriously injure the child, even with a child restraint system.
You can see an overview of the BMW driver's seat here .
Installation of safety restraint systems for children
For the front passenger seat:
Before installing the child restraint system on the front passenger seat, make sure that the front and side child restraints on the front passenger side are deactivated.
If you install a child restraint system on the front passenger seat, you must deactivate the front passenger airbag, otherwise the airbags can seriously injure the child, even with a child restraint system.
Seat position and height:
Before installing the universal child restraint system, move the front passenger seat to the rear end position, and set it to the middle position in height to ensure optimal positioning of the belt on the body and protection in the event of an accident. Do not change the position and height of the seat anymore.
Back width:
Before installing the child restraint system on the front passenger seat, fully open the backrest width. After that, do not change the width of the backrest and do not restore the memorized position. Before installing the child restraint system on the front passenger seat, set the maximum width of the backrest. The width of the back can no longer be changed, otherwise the stability of the child seat may decrease.
Child seats of the ISOFIX system (for the rear seat):
The following ISOFIX restraint systems can be used on the rear seats. The corresponding classes are indicated by letters or the ISO name on the child seats.
A - ISO/F3
C - ISO/R3
B - ISO/F2
D - ISO/R2
B1 - ISO/F2X
E - ISO/R1
F - ISO/L1
G - ISO/L2
ISOFIX system lower mounts:
To avoid a reduction in the effectiveness of the protective action, check that the lower ISOFIX anchors are correctly closed and that the child seat fits snugly against the back of the car seat.
Before installing ISOFIX child restraint systems, remove the seat belt from the child seat attachment.
The lower fasteners of the ISOFIX system are located in the gap between the seat and the back:

How to install an ISOFIX child restraint system:
1. Install the child restraint system, see system operating instructions.
2. Make sure that both ISOFIX anchorages are properly engaged.
ISOFIX upper safety belt
There are two points for attaching the upper seat belt of the ISOFIX restraint system:

Seat belt position
In order for the upper fastening belt to fully perform its functions, make sure that it is not twisted anywhere and does not rub against sharp edges. Otherwise, the belt will not be able to properly hold the child restraint in the event of an accident.

1 - Direction of movement.
2 - Headrest.
3 - Carabiner of the upper safety belt.
4 - Attachment point/eyelet.
5 - Rear shelf.
6 - Seat back.
7 - Upper safety belt.
