Let's imagine that we have placed two conductors in a vacuum, parallel to each other, 1 meter long and 1 meter apart. When we pass an electric current through them, they begin to interact. If the current in both conductors flows in the same direction, they are attracted to each other, and if in different directions, they repel each other.

This phenomenon became decisive for the creation of the current measurement unit. If the force of interaction between these conductors is equal to 2*10^-7 Newtons, then such a current is considered equal to 1 ampere. This unit was named after AM Ampere, a French scientist, and was adopted for use in the International System of Units (SI).

Why is the amp important?

Without measuring current strength, we would not be able to use electricity efficiently. Taking too many amps for a device that is rated for less can damage it or even cause a fire.

There is a parameter called "time-current characteristic" (CCH), which reflects the dependence of the operating time of the device on the current passing through the switch to its nominal value. On the case of the automatic circuit breaker, you can see the letter indices CSH, which show the multiplicity of the installation of the electromagnetic disconnector to the rated current of the circuit breaker. This is the minimum value at which an instantaneous trip will occur. There are the following letter indices of the CSH: В (3 – 5* In); С (5 – 10* In); D (10 – 20* In).

Thanks to the ability to calculate current consumption, it is possible to build protection systems against short circuits. From simple ones such as a fuse to complex ones built on microprocessors with current sensors.

Thanks to the constant technological development and improvement of automotive electronics, today we have the opportunity to use smart short-circuit protection systems. These systems play a key role in ensuring the safety of the vehicle and its electronic components.

Fuses:

This is the simplest and most traditional way of protecting automotive electrical systems. A fuse is a component that blows or disconnects when the current in the system reaches a dangerously high level, preventing further damage.

 

 


Microprocessor protection systems:

With the development of technology, car electronics have become much smarter. Modern protection systems may contain microprocessors that monitor current levels in real time.

 


When the system detects abnormal or dangerously high current levels, it can automatically shut down an individual component or the entire electrical system to prevent damage. In addition, display the power of current consumption through diagnostic equipment and record malfunctions in the operation of this or that node.


Current sensors:

These sensors are able to detect the smallest changes in the current.

They send data to the microprocessor of the protection system, which analyzes the received information and makes appropriate decisions, for example, disconnects the power source in case of danger.


Thanks to such systems, cars become not only more efficient, but also safer for the driver and passengers. Regardless of the level of complexity of the protection system, their main purpose is to ensure the reliability of automotive electronics and prevent its damage.

Ampere was named after Andre-Marie Ampere, a French scientist of the 19th century who was one of the pioneers in electrodynamics. He made revolutionary discoveries that helped us better understand how electricity works.
